Why are so many hash tags on one cute puppy image on Google Plus?
I stopped counting after twenty of them.
But this interested me into finding out why would this be so important to blast a simply adorable puppy pic with hashtags?
What was the strategy behind this tactic?
I just don’t understand…
Then I thought, how can we use them looking at it from a business approach?
I’ve seen these specially tagged words on social sites but what actually do they mean?
Due to its widespread use, ‘hashtag’ was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in June 2014.
Let’s take a look because I didn’t know much either, but I wanted to find out.
Misconceptions Of These Special Social Signal
Some online groups, mastermind cults, or training systems teach some bad habits by overusing them, making your brand look and feel unprofessional, “spam marketing”, is what I call it.
Maybe folks just don’t know how to work with them and just never took the time to do a little research.
Feel good, I did the research for you. And I won’t mislead your thoughts along the way.
Hashtags are a way for social media users to tag their posts with keywords, which in turn makes them easier for social networks to organize and users to search out that particular word.
A word or phrase that begins with a hash mark (#), used within a message to identify a keyword or topic of interest.
Becoming easily searched for and found on social media.
So whenever a user adds a tag to their post, it is immediately indexed by the social network and becomes searchable by other users.
Once someone clicks on that hashtag, they’ll be brought to a page that has all of the other posts with the same hashtagged keyword in real-time.
Or Live conversations.
You’re adding your say-so on a particular topic, in live time, on social media.
For example, you just posted a piece of content on “How to Feed a month old Pitbull properly?”
Hash Tags would be, “#pitbullhabits”, “feedingpuppys”, or even “#PitBullPuppyPower”…
One more example for the road…
#MudChopsMedia would be a hashtag for my business.
Same as yours. #Your Business
Why Would We Want To Do This?
Some benefits of this strategy are your adding voice to a topic you know so well.
People see your content, read, like, trust, building brand awareness for starters.
Then, doing this over a period of time, building a solid strategy around your special talents, builds authority within the conversations you are a part of.
Showing off a professional business persona as well.
Rule One and The Only Rule For Hash Tags
Don’t use and abuse the practice.
You don’t need any more than 1-3 tags per post.
This is not a major fundamental strategy to your marketing plan.
You might not tag everything.
Be a part of the conversation, instead of looking at it like an SEO, gaining traffic to your site, kind of deal.
Make tagging a little part of your social media strategy.
Don’t rely on them for mega business.
We do it to build brand awareness, build authority within your voice, creating influence within that conversation.
Which Networks Support These Metadata Tags?
As the list that follows is not all social channels that support hashtags. These are the ones that you and I need to worry about.
Remember, social media is not to dilute the message across thousands of profiles…be effective and respective on just a few here.
Let’s see how the media socially, organizes data and makes it easier for user consumption of content
The network that brought us this tagging practice is the most popular site to use it on. Just scrolling through my own feed, I see that more than half of the tweets contain a hash symbol.
You can find the trending topics on the left-hand side of your Twitter stream.
On this social channel, you might be a little confused about something.
The difference between a mention and a tag.
A mention looks like this, @yourname or @your business is just a way to talk to or about you personally.
As you know, a hashtag (#your-business), is a way to add your voice to the conversation, in live time.
Clicking a hashtag on Facebook will bring you to a page with the live conversation going on there. Same concept.
You’ll also see the different trending topics in the top right-hand corner of your News Feed.
The plan on this one is great if you want to see photos similar to the ones that you’ve taken.
Simply #tag the picture you took and it will create a link to a page with other pictures of the same subject.
Google+ uses these about the same as the others, but with one main difference.
Google+ will add tag words to content if they think that it is a relevant or popular keyword.
You can always opt-out of this through Google+ if you’d like.
How To Use Social Tagging without looking like a crazy person
Here’re some strategies to help you when it’s time to accomplish this tactic:
Don’t use up all your words on one share or post, use only one to three at a time. Use one if you are experimenting with them now.
The best place to find good conversations is the folks that influence you. How do you follow or Tweet with? How do they use them?
When your products and services come to mind, see what your computation is doing, maybe see how they build and perform a strategy.
The most popular ones are with a cool image and instant videos to watch. 77% scan content…Feed that laziness. I know I scan, too!!!
Keep your plan simple. This is not a major part of marketing. Just a tactic within your overall social sharing plan.
Infographics, a stats, and facts mega list page, or the newest media on the block, is the effective way of doing this.
Don’t be a hog, share others words of wisdom. This is the fastest way out of a nonengaging social profile.
Add cool words to your already cool piece of content
Hash Tag Meanings might differ from one person to another. Certainly, it changes for certain business models say, sports cards collector and a network administrator.
Some will use them, some will not.
I think most out here don’t understand how to use them.
Either they have been misleading from some online “guru”, or never took the time to learn.
We all are in a hurry these days. (Count me in on that one, too….Damn it!!!)
Settle in and learn, research things.
We do have massive opportunities to find whatever we want these days.
Use this to our advantage.
Keeping a strategy is simple, using the fundamentals and keeping it understandable for folks, you will be just fine here.
Don’t use software’s or plugins to do it for you.
Trust me, headaches and heart attacks are the coming onslaughts.
